Being human

I would say being human is both simple but yet complex. Similar to animals, we have the ability to desire, perceive, and move from place to place to satisfy both our wants and need, as per Aristotle’s observation. But the distinguishing factor between humans and animals in these acts, would be the sense of entitlement that humans practice with. This sense of entitlement causes a sense of self-righteousness, where we feel like we are the ultimate judge of right and wrong which results in unchecked freedom. This freedom can however be viewed as a double edged sword.  There is the freedom to desire, want, and move with consideration of other forms of life. Which brings us to the privileged sphere, Dr. Nussbaum mentions. Nussbaum’s purposeful use of the diction, ‘privileged’ places emphasis that the comfort lifestyle of pets or rather domesticated animals, is only made possible by humans and can very well be undone by them. This constrast can be seen in the following statement that Nussbaum further discusses in great detail. This however demonstrates the sense of entitlement that was previously mentioned. With the issues of pets, humans are the ultimate guide of the quality of treatment other forms of life that ultimately prioritizes our needs. As can be seen with pigs, chickens, etc, are treated in ‘hideous brutality’ in order to satisfy our needs and wants.
